For most horses – the Le Tixerant provides welcome relief while allowing for a very stabilized saddle without overtightening of the girth.  We do not recommend it for extremely forward girth grooves, or ponies as it is a wider design.

I research the products we sell at Just Equus and my collection of girths has grown over the years.  My horse is a perfect test subject as she has an opinion about everything and expresses herself well.  My horse made it clear that the Le Tixerant was her girth of choice.  On switching back to a traditional leather girth or a couple other test girths I have tried on her, she has turned to stare at me and then the girth as if to say “uhmmm, this is the wrong girth, please use the right one.”..   Then she takes this big breath as if to say – look I can’t breathe like I can in MY girth.  It is true, the Le Tixerant allows for more expansion of the rib cage without sacrificing stability.  I do believe there are other wonderful girths that will be appropriate for different horses’ needs, but the Le Tixerant is clearly my horse’s favorite.

Just when Baretek was growing a large following, their manufacture was stopped.  We received regular calls from disappointed customers.  A few months ago, we were happy to hear that the Baretek would be on the market again.   And re-listed them on our new site:  www.JustEquus.com.

In the past I used my Baretek English Pad about as much as my wonderful Vogue Saddle.  My horse loved it – and so did I.  The Knee Rolls and Cantle, although not that large, were a feature that gave more security out on the trails for the occasional spook.  The suede provided additional grip too – I have ridden through exuberant wintertime bucks and yahoos on occassion as if I was velcroed to the ‘saddle’!

If you are looking for a bareback pad, or your friends are, I highly recommend this pad at this price!  One thing to keep in mind is that if your horse has high or pronounced withers you need to consider the underpad (between Baretek and saddle pad).  My tall withered Oldenburg mare is completely comfortable in a soft cotton high wither-cut saddle pad (with a soft, non-protruding spine), and a Light Fill Smart Panel, and the Baretek Pad.  (A soft sheepskin pad with inserts such as the Fleeceworks Perfect Balance Pad is also a good option).  The Smart Panel dispersed pressure around her withers and for the past 4+ years, she has been relaxed and comfortable during our Baretek days.  In fact at one point in time (when I first bought the Baretek to use while searching for an appropriate saddle for her), we rode through the Fall & Winter in this pad and the atrophy behind her shoulders due to a fitted (but uncomfortable) saddle, her LAST treed saddle I might add, gradually disappeared!  She moved better in the Baretek than she had in the Wintec, Collegiate, County, Egon Von Neindorff, Kieffer, and Albion saddles I had ridden her in previously.  We finally found a saddle that she approved wholeheartedly, but that is another story..

Heavy metal toxicity – I believe it may be at the forefront of a number of growing environmental issues that are causing cancer and disease in animals and people.  I am not a vet or doctor, but am simply sharing my opinion and more importantly information I have come across in my readings.

A new acquaintance, Cristina, just told me about her dog who was diagnosed with Alzheimers.   While we talked about her pets I remembered watching an interview with Larry Jones, the trainer of the talented TB, Eight Belles who passed so tragically.  He said that months after the loss of Eight Belles, he began experiencing growing memory loss and confusion – what seemed to be symptoms of Alzheimers.  It worsened to a point that he could not run his business, he eventually had to retire from work.  Initially his doctors diagnosed him with Alzheimers.  He later consulted with a doctor who tested him for heavy metals and found that levels of Aluminum in his body were extremely high.  They surmised that his antipersperant were a likely source of the Aluminum (although it could have been much more).  He was treated for Aluminum toxicity.   In the months that followed, his Aluminum levels returned to normal and his mental abilities recovered as well.  He was able to return to his training practice (the interview was before the race of the talented filly, Joyful Victory, at the Kentucky Oaks in 2011).  Personally I have many criticisms of the race industry and do not agree with many of their practices, but I do watch the Kentucky Derby sometimes and was interested in what Eight Belle’s trainer had to say.  I imagined that Larry faced a tough period in his life during the months after that fateful race..

Anyways, I asked Cristina if her vet had tested her dog for heavy metal toxicity.  She said “No” and that her dog was receiving the drug Selegiline, standard treatment for Alzheimers in dogs.  Her vet said that people can suffer from Aluminum toxicity but not dogs.   That statement piqued my curiosity.
Here is some information I found on the topic shared by Holistic Vets concerned about this issue after seeing so many cases of heavy metal toxicity in their patients.  It contradicts what this particular vet believes.  And in my opinion, is information that any vet should be familiar with..

I came upon ‘Ashes & Snow’ a few years ago while searching the web.  Mysterious and profound, I found myself immersed in images capturing moments between animals, humans, and nature,  accompanied with almost meditational words and sounds;  it was a world that seemed beyond time, beyond thought..  I was in complete awe.

Developed by industry leaders Lee Middleton (Point Two) and Tim How (Racesafe), together with safety experts and leading riders such as eventer Oliver Townend and jockey Ruby Walsh, the Point Two P2-RS sets a new standard in riding safety!

The new jacket (for the US market) is available in BETA Level 1 to Level 3 versions.  Incorporating an RS2010 Racesafe body protector  (approved to BETA 2009 Level 3, and to European Standard EN 13158:2009 Level 3) with the Point Two Air Vest Technology, the ‘P2-RS’ Hybrid is one of the safest vests on the market today.   The Hybrid is also available with Level 1 & 2 rated body protectors for the US Market.

The UK’s safety standards are much more stringent than the US’ and riders in the US are not required to wear BETA 2009 Level 3 protection… yet.   What we are finding in the US is that the professional competitors are invariably choosing the Point Two P2-RS Hybrid Jacket w/ Level 1 protection as it is less cumbersome, easy to move in, and I have been told still has over 3 times the protective value of a Tipperary Body Protector (which over here is one of the most widely used vests).

The Point Two Air Technology inflation rates are some of the highest – at speeds of up to 0.093 of a second.  The fractions of a second in inflation speed are critical especially in rotational falls.  And the Hybrid is almost 20% lighter than using a separate body protector and Point Two ProAir jacket together.   Actual weight is 907 grms = 1.99 lbs

The Point Two P2-RS works in exactly the same way as the Point Two ProAir. A lanyard attached to the jacket is clipped onto the horse’s saddle. Once the rider leaves the saddle during a fall, the lanyard detaches itself from the Point Two Hybrid, triggering the release of CO2 gas from a canister.

In up to 0.093 of a second, the air bag inflates on the outside of the body protector, offering almost instantaneous, enhanced protection to all the major thoracic and upper abdominal organs, the spine and the collar of the neck.   On inflation, the vest will hold a rider tight for 10sec and then slowly deflate. During that time the rider will have full movement of their arms and legs.

The Point Two P2-RS passed the European Standard EN 13158:2009 Level 3 both when uninflated and inflated. In addition, rigorous checks were made on the inflated Hybrid body protector to ensure it did not impede riders should they need to roll away from danger when on the ground.
