One of the most beautiful artistic explorations – between animals & humans..

Ashes & Snow

“In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards rediscovering the common ground that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals. The images depict a world that is without beginning or end, here or there, past or present.”

Gregory Colbert, Creator of Ashes and Snow

I came upon ‘Ashes & Snow’ a few years ago while searching the web.  Mysterious and profound, I found myself immersed in images capturing moments between animals, humans, and nature,  accompanied with almost meditational words and sounds;  it was a world that seemed beyond time, beyond thought..  I was in complete awe.

Ashes & Snow’s creator, Gregory Colbert, travelled over 10 years on filming expeditions to locations such as India, Egypt, Burma, Tonga, Sri Lanka, Namibia, Kenya, Antarctica, the Azores, and Borneo over a decade.  With profound respect, the artist sought to capture the nature of each animal he filmed & photographed;  and were the material for his artistic creations (photos, film, writing, virtual experience).

Debuting in Venice in 2002, and with its final showing in Mexico City in 2008, (and this is not counting the website visitors who have enjoyed it such as myself), over 10 million people went to see ‘Ashes & Snow’.  I imagine they were also touched by this experience, and perhaps left in wonder contemplating the mysterious and profound connection between ourselves and animals & nature.  The artist knew that being in understanding, somehow deeply connected to other living creatures and nature, could not merely be understood or conceptualized, but that it was beyond thought and beyond words.. something to be experienced & conveyed, in feeling – in the moment.
